DESERT ROCK GARDEN is a fictionalized historical story of a young orphan and a Japanese immigrant who forge a friendship in the Topaz Relocation Center, one of the internment camps for Japanese and Japanese Americans that were established during World War II. Originally produced as part of NVA’s Final Draft New Play Festival, DESERT ROCK GARDEN is an unforgettable story of persistence and the importance of art in the most difficult of times. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and California Civil Liberties Program, DESERT ROCK GARDEN will be presented during the 80th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066, in which President Franklin D Roosevelt created the Japanese-American internment camps, now known as the Day of Remembrance.

March 18 – May 1, 2022
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by James Lapine
Directed by Kristianne Kurner

Eleven years ago, New Village Arts produced its first musical. Now, in the midst of our 20th season, NVA partners with Oceanside Theatre Company to return to the musical that started it all. INTO THE WOODS brings well-known fairytale characters to musical life. Interwoven through their tales is the story of a baker and his wife, whose longing for a child is thwarted by a mischievous witch. Stephen Sondheim’s songs, seamlessly melded to James Lapine’s text, are perfect expressions of the complications of living in modern society and the difficult choices we encounter on the paths of our lives. INTO THE WOODS will transform the Oceanside Theatre Company’s stage into a magic land where almost anything can (and does) happen.
