Oceanside Theatre Company Set to Grow in 2023 

OTC diversifies and doubles the size of its board of directors with six new members

(Oceanside, CA) Dec. 27, 2022 – As Oceanside Theatre Company (OTC) looks forward to a new year of growth, the resident company of the Historic Brooks Theater adds six new members to its board of directors, the largest influx of board leadership in the 12-year history of the organization. A multi-talented group of individuals, including educators, public accountants, program managers, and community advocates, the new additions to the board of directors are a step towards OTC’s commitment to expanding and diversifying its governing body spearheaded by its first Interim Managing Director Alex Goodman who was hired in April 2022.

“These appointments mark another significant shift in the organization’s history. I have spent the past seven months building relationships with members of the Oceanside community, and OTC is beginning to see the fruit of that labor. The addition of this group of leaders signifies a giant step forward in representing and serving the diverse communities here in Oceanside,” said Goodman.

 

The new board of directors brings a variety of different experiences and backgrounds to the theater with the appointment of Gloria Joan Banks, J.D. (Fallbrook), John Bosher (Oceanside), Susan Chubbuck, C.P.A. (Oceanside), Jaime (Jimmy) Figueroa (Oceanside), Adrianne Hakes, Ed. D. (Oceanside) and Marc M. Herman (Oceanside). 

“I joined the board because I love the Brooks and am excited to see it become more a part of the community. I would like to see more Oceanside residents connecting to the theater!” said Hakes.

The new members join President John McCoy (Carlsbad), Vice President Leann Garms (Carlsbad), Treasurer Erik Bradbury (Oceanside), Secretary Carol Naegle (Vista), Ed Parish (Oceanside) and Evan Huckabay (San Diego). 

“We are thrilled to have such talented leaders with multi-faceted backgrounds join the OTC Board,” said McCoy. “These new members represent a significant step in the growth and diversification of the Company, and will be instrumental in the expanded programming and plans for the Brooks.”

In the new year, Oceanside Theatre Company will be producing a complete four-show main stage theater season beginning with Lucky Stiff in March. It will also be teaming up with Kenneth Rexrode and Six String Society for “Live! at the Brooks,” a nine concert series featuring jazz, gospel, rock and more starting with Swedish “queen of swing” Gunhild Carling on January 13. In June, the theater company also plans to begin renovations on the Sunshine Brooks Theater’s lobby, box office, restroom and studio theater. In September 2023, the theater company will host its first gala since the pandemic.

“2023 is shaping up to be a year of tremendous growth for OTC.  The new leadership on the board will help guide expanded programming and community offerings and otherwise help the organization develop into this new phase of growth. I am excited to work with everyone on the board to develop organizational structure and generate ideas about how we can best engage with our community in 2023 and beyond. We are already hard at work to offer a host of dance, improv, and other classes, and we are working to further develop recent partnerships with organizations like Sown in Truth Orations (The Bus Ride Home), Teatro Caliente Academy of Arts (Mexhico: The Journey Continues), MadStrange (Still Not A Player), Oceanside Historical Society (Histories and Mysteries), and Muscle Meditation (Laugh Your Fat Off Comedy Night). It promises to be a very eclectic and exciting year ahead,” Goodman said.

About the New Board Members

Gloria Joan Banks, a retired law professor,  relocated to North County in 2018 from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for the warm weather and a desire for proximity to her birthplace and family in San Bernardino and currently lives in Fallbrook. A graduate of Howard University for both undergraduate and law school, she worked for Rhoades and Sinan, one of the largest law firms in the Central Pennsylvania region before joining the faculty at Widener University in 1991. In addition to her work in the classroom, Banks served as a young adult trustee on the National Board of the Urban League in New York.  

Banks has written and directed several plays for church audiences and community groups. Since volunteering for local stages from Oceanside to Coronado, Gloria and her husband have become enamored with the talent and professionalism of theater arts offerings in the North County area. 

John Bosher is a Senior Manager Continuous Improvement Specialist and Environmental Health and Safety at Steico Industries.  He is an experienced Senior Program Manager in the aviation and aerospace industry. He brings strong experience in program and project management, Research and Development (R&D,) Budgeting and Product Design to OTC. 

Susan Chubbuck, a certified public accountant at Intuit, is a newer Oceanside resident, having moved from Laguna Niguel in 2020. Having worked in both public and private industries in a number of financial positions throughout her career, Chubbuck was the long-time corporate controller of a computer sales and repair firm where she analyzed operations results and helped to grow the company from $500,000 in sales to more than $4 million. A graduate of California State University Los Angeles with a bachelor of science degree in accounting, she is single and loves attending the theater with her Mom.

Jaime (Jimmy) Figueroa is the Executive Director of Operation HOPE-North County. Prior to this role, Jimmy served as Program Manager for Resilience Community Mentoring Program. He developed and implemented the program under the Vista Community Clinic’s Health Promotion Center and in partnership with the San Diego County Probation Department. Figueroa previously worked with Oceanside Promise, creating a pilot initiative for Latinx youth and as Program Supervisor for Project REACH Libby Lake. Jimmy attended Oceanside Unified Schools and is an alumnus of MiraCosta Community Learning Center and MiraCosta College. He holds a B.A. in political science from UC Berkeley and a Juris Doctor Degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. 

A strong community advocate for the underserved, Figueroa currently holds leadership roles within the North County Gang Commission, Oceanside Police and Fire Commission, MiraCosta Foundation Board, and was recently appointed as co-chair of the Live Well San Diego North County Community Leadership Team.

Dr. Adrianne Hakes, Ed. D. is a retired educator and school administrator who has lived in Oceanside with her family of five children since 1975. She taught at El Camino High School while her children were attending school, and then served as an administrator in three other districts before retiring. Since then, she has served on the Oceanside Library Board of Trustees, Oceanside Cultural Arts District Board, Oceanside Cultural Arts District Foundation and the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation. She lives in downtown Oceanside and is excited to be on the Board and part of the redevelopment of the Brooks Theater.

Marc M. Herman is a retired financial executive with a successful 28 year history at defense/government contracting (both public and private) companies in the service, manufacturing, and R&D sectors. He  has served on the City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation Commission for the past eight years and has previously served as Board Treasurer for the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
