Theatre Wellness Pilates: Pilates & the Powerhouse


As part of our Arts Unite series, Theatre Wellness Pilates offers an afternoon of movement and body awareness designed for performers and community members alike. Led by longtime Pilates instructor Michelle Jimmink, these sessions focus on core strength, alignment, and mindful movement that support both performance and overall wellness. Registration is free, and participants are welcome to attend one class or stay for the full sequence of sessions below.

Class Schedule:
12 PM – 12:55 PM: Pilates Fundamentals for the Actor – 55 min (all levels)
All level Pilates class, geared towards the actor, with the goals of total body muscle activation, balance, and corrective body alignment.  Mindful movement taking the fundamental exercises deeper – learn the ABCs of the method.

1 PM – 1:25 PM: Pilates & the Powerhouse – 25 min (all levels)
Learn how to simply and quickly activate your powerhouse, including the pelvic floor with a no-nonsense approach.  Appropriate for any level, from no previous Pilates to the advanced practitioner.

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Traditional Pilates Mat – 1 hour (all levels to intermediate)
Experience the traditional mat Pilates repertoire, challenge your core & coordination, and fall in love with the original Method – as Joe intended.

Teacher Bio: Michelle Jimmink
Michelle has taught more than 2000 Pilates mat classes and taught at minimum a combined 20,000 hours of Pilates in private and group sessions.  She has taught in small boutique studios, health and wellness programs, and medical rehab clinics.  She has taught for UCSD Recreation for the past 30 years, since 1996, as a gymnastics coach and dance & pilates instructor.   Michelle is the program developer and coordinator for the Pilates Teacher Training Program “On The Mat” at UCSD Recreation & FitLife. Her Pilates training includes extensive study with Rael Isacowitz for comprehensive Pilates on mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Arm Chair, Ped-O-Pul, Avalon System and small apparatus; Karen Clippinger, MSPE, for special conditions and populations of spine, hip, knee & pelvis; Carolyne Anthony for Pre & Post Natal Specialist including rehabilitation for diastysis recti, pelvic floor and c-section recovery.

She has also attended numerous other workshops with Pilates Masters. She has had the honor of completing the prestigious international Passing the Torch program established by Balanced Body University. Her mentorship for Passing the Torch was with Karen Clippinger, MSPE, and specializes in utilizing Pilates for core development with spine conditions. The specialty includes osteoporosis, osteopenia, kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, disc protrusions/bulge, spine fusions and sacroiliac dysfunction.  She also has the advanced certification for Pilates for Dancers from CSU Long Beach.

Michelle holds a BA from UC San Diego and an MBA from CSU San Marcos.
