Oceanside Theatre Company Presents Youth Performance 13, The Musical July 14-16

A Grown Up Musical About Growing Up

(Oceanside) July 5, 2023 – Oceanside Theatre Company (OTC) is thrilled to announce its upcoming youth performance of 13, The Musical, showcasing the talents of actors ages 9 to 15. This vibrant coming-of-age comedy-drama serves as the culminating experience for the OTC Youth Summer Camp, where participants have been immersed in the world of theatre, exploring various aspects of performance, design, and tech.

13, The Musical will take place July 14-16 at the Brooks Theater in Oceanside. Tickets are $15-$20 and can be purchased online at OceansideTheatre.org or by calling (760) 433-8900.

“We are immensely proud of our young performers who have dedicated their time and energy to developing their craft during our summer camp,” said Directors, Sharon and Anna Duchi. “Through their hard work and commitment, they have not only grown their theatre expertise but have also learned important life skills such as confidence, teamwork, and artistic expression.”

13, The Musical  by Dan Elish and Robert Horn with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown is a hilarious and heartwarming coming-of-age story that follows Evan Goldman, a preteen navigating the complexities of life after being uprooted from New York City to a small Indiana town. With his Bar Mitzvah just around the corner, Evan strives to build new friendships in time for this momentous occasion. With an unforgettable rock score composed by Brown, a Tony Award-winning artist, this energetic musical explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and individuality. The musical is set to captivate audiences with its infectious energy, catchy songs, and relatable characters.

The only Broadway musical ever to have a cast and band entirely made of teenagers, 13, The Musical was also the professional Broadway debut of Ariana Grande. It was adapted into a Netflix movie in 2022.

Under the guidance of Directors Sharon and Anna Duchi, the young performers of OTC have dedicated themselves to honing their acting, singing, and dancing skills. 13, The Musical showcases their passions and talents while reflecting the valuable lessons learned throughout the summer camp. Thanks to generous donations from community partners, Oceanside Theatre Company provided 12 camp scholarships.

In addition to the performance camp, OTC offered a successful Theatre Design Camp for the second year in a row, in which instructor Carol Naegele taught campers about crafting scenery, costumes, lighting and makeup. New this year, Nathan Cargill taught Technical Theatre Camp in which campers learn about light and sound board operation, set building, stage management and more. These campers will also have the opportunity to work on the show for performances, running boards, spot lights, and helping backstage.
