Oceanside Theatre Company Presents Art, Comedy, Mother’s Day Sips and New Classes in May 2023

(Oceanside) May 3, 2023 – Ever dedicated to being a hub for the arts in San Diego’s North County Oceanside Theatre Company has an exciting line up of events this month! We’re also excited to announce the addition of morning yoga and senior dance classes. 

Artist Open House: “The Art of Friendship”
Friday, May 5, 5-8 pm

Brooks Theater Gallery presents “The Art of Friendship,” an art exhibit featuring works from 18 artists in honor of OTC’s production of Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire. The free artist open house on May 5 from 5-8 pm will feature an artist demonstration, live music, light refreshments and mini-tours of the theater. Visitors will take trips through the costume and prop room, the tech loft, the main stage, the makeup room, the studio, and the shop, while discussing some of the history and mystery of the Brooks Theater. “The Art of Friendship” exhibit runs from May 2-31. Cinco de Mayo Comedy with Rene Garcia
Friday, May 5, 8 pm

Get ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style with the hilarious comedian Rene Garcia hosted by Nerd Comedy’s Tim X. Lee! With a quick wit and a talent for making audiences of all ages laugh, Garcia is a master of comedy. One of the most entertaining and energetic comedians in the circuit today, he has 15 years experience doing stand up. Garcia has appeared on MTV, NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Showtime and HULU on Jeff Garcia’s stand up comedy special The Ten Dollar Ticket, as well as done acting work on ABC’s Castle and in Marlon Wayans’s movie Fifty Shades Of Black. The co-host of  All Turns No Brakes, a NASCAR podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and GooglePlay, he has been labeled the Latino Jerry Lewis. Mother’s Day is Sweet
Saturday, May 6, 2 pm – 5 pm

On Saturday, May 6, experience the sweeter side of Oceanside with Oceanside Theatre Company and other local businesses. From 2-5 pm, treat Mom to an afternoon of dessert, savory bites, and craft beverage tasting throughout Downtown Oceanside while you shop for her and make her day. Bring the whole family and enjoy mobile scavenger hunt fun and sweets while you walk. OTC will be serving samples of “Southie Sippa,” our signature drink for Good People. So come sip and enjoy this month’s “The Art of Friendship” exhibit at the Brooks Theater Gallery. Gallery curator Carol Naegele and House Manager Jesse Russo will be hosting the event. Mother’s Day is Sweet takes place Saturday, May 6 from 2-4 pm in downtown Oceanside. Tickets range from $45 for adults to $15 for kids. Richard Lederer: An Afternoon of Language & Laughter
Sunday, May 7, 2 pm
Union-Tribune language columnist Richard Lederer, author of Anguished English, will take you on a joy ride through the glories and oddities of our marvelous English language, in which you drive in a parkway and park in a driveway and your nose can run and your feet can smell. Dr. Lederer will also perform some of the greatest puns ever. Lederer is the author of 60 books about language, history, and humor. He is a founding co-host of “A Way With Words,” broadcast pm KPBS. An Afternoon of Language & Laughter takes place Sunday, May 7 at 2 pm at OTC’s Studio 219 (219 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside). Improvised Comedy with The Tarnished Nobles
Saturday, May 13, 7:30 pm 
Improv at the Brooks presents The Tarnished Nobles, a team of seasoned improvisers from Irreverent Improv and American Improv Theatre. This show will be a fun evening of improvised comedy based completely on audience suggestions. Professional improviser, actor, and writer Jeff Ringgold will be hosting the evening of side-splitting laughter. Improvised Comedy with The Tarnished Nobles takes place Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 pm at OTC’s Studio 219 (219 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside). Vinyasa Yoga Classes

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:15 am – 9:15 am
The vinyasa yoga class flows from one posture to another at a mindful pace, with a primary focus on strengthening technique and alignment. Created to strengthen the foundation of practitioners, this class provides all the necessary tools to take one’s practice to the next level. The instructor, Beatrice Crosbie, is a Yoga Alliance 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher who began her yoga journey in 2009. Having studied in many cities and countries around the world, including the Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram in Rishikesh, India, Beatrice decided to deepen her practice and expand into teaching in 2018. She focuses on the connection between breath and movement, cultivating higher body awareness and presence, and encourages playful exploration of the poses while letting go of perfection. Vinyasa Yoga Classes takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15-9:15 am at OTC’s Studio 219 (219 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside). Senior Dance Movement

Thursdays, 9:20 am – 10 am
Get moving and grooving with this upbeat class of gentle stretching, balance, and dancing it out every Thursday from 9:20 am to 10 am Inspired by dance genres of musical theatre and classic jazz, this class will start your day with a smile. The instructor, Beatrice Crosbie, is a performer and vocal coach, recently returned to San Diego from NYC. A proud alumn of UCLA’s Musical Theatre undergrad, some of Bea’s favorite credits are 1st International Tour of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Wardrobe/Mrs Potts us), National Tour of 42nd Street (Diane Lorimer/Dorothy Brock us) and Dr. Suess’ Grinch (Grandma Who). Beatrice is passionate about passing on original choreography from some of Broadway’s most iconic shows and exploring the endless possibilities of the voice. Senior Dance Movement classes take place every Thursday from 9:20-10 am at OTC’s Studio 219 (219 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside). Registration is $15 per session and is available at OceansideTheatre.org.
